Creativity Museum Exhibit Project Brief

My specific design focuses on creating an inviting space to learn about the wear and tear of running shoes, specifically about long distance running shoes. The exhibit teaches primarily the evolution of the tread and cushion of a distance running shoe by using textured shoe soles that people can touch and feel as well as an "exploded view" of a generic distance shoe that expands and condenses using a dial that users can interact with.
After extensive ideation, brainstorming, and research of human interaction, I narrowed my process down to the ideas and sketches below. These ideas show the thought process behind the interactivity of my exhibit as well as the appealing aspect of how it draws the eyes with light effects.
Group Room Floor Plan
Process during Early Iterations:
Problems I ran into and questions that I asked myself included:
- Lighting over the exhibit did not fit the overall feel of the room.
- Practicality of where the strings from the hanging shoe are attached.
- How can I draw people’s eyes to my exhibit initially?
- How can I make my exhibit wheelchair accessible?
This image below was my first render of the exhibit, which can compare to my most recent render in the ways I applied the questions I asked myself to better the exhibit design.
Below I have shown my proposed solution to aid in drawing users eyes to the exhibit. After rendering this component, I decided to remove all but one in hopes to not overwhelm users in the exhibit room.
Below is my proposed solution for this exhibit design with the final touches made on the render.
Below is a storyboard of how children can easily access the exhibit in order to interact with the dial and texture area.
Project Summary:
Throughout the course of this project, I have constantly been changing iterations, ideas, and concepts to better apply to the user. This exhibit has accomplished my main goals stated above, which are to remain accessible to all, to draw attention using my understanding of human behavior, and most importantly, to teach young children and adults about something important to me.
The topic of running shoes is one of my main interests and it was an honor to design a space that not only teaches children about the topic, but emerses the user into a whole new world through my use of LED effects, backlit hanging shoes, floating shoes, and an overall futuristic aesthetic in the exhibit space.
Looking ahead, I plan to develop this project further through creating a more immersive area centered around athletic shoes of all kinds, which is a field of design that most interests me.
